The St. Aidan's House Society

This ministry is an outreach of All Saints' Anglican Church founded by long time church member Judge Harry Aime in 1973. Though the society operates independantly of the church its by-laws stipulate Board members of the society must be members of All Saints' Anglican Parish of Fort McMurray.

The Harry Aime Annex was added to All Saints' Church in 2000 and currently houses offices for the St. Aidan's Foster Care Program, two Sunday School/meeting rooms and offices for our Pastor and Parish Administrator.

The St. Aidan's House Society owns and operates a house at 9908 Manning Avenue. It was fully renovated in 2009 and currently houses the offices of Some Other Solutions which provides a variety of crisis and wellness programs. St. Aidans house also has a 12 person conference room available for rent to community groups.

St. Aidan's Society

St. Aidan's Society is a non-profit organization that is contractually funded through Social Services. The foster care program was created in 1994. This was in response to a large number of children being placed outside the community due to a lack of foster homes. The St. Aidan's Therapeutic Foster Care Program exists exclusively in Fort McMurray. The program provides quality service and support to children and families.

What Is the Role of A Foster Parent

Children are placed in foster homes when a Child Welfare Worker deems that they are unable to live with their natural family. The foster parent(s) become resposible for the day to day social, emotional, educational, and cultural needs of the child. This is done in conjunction with the Foster Care Coordinator and the Child Welfare Worker. Children are placed into the foster care for their own unique circumstances, therefore case plans are individualized to each child.

The Children

The children range from birth to 18 years of age. They come from a variety of social and cultural backrounds, and have their own individual needs. Prior to being placed in our foster homes, the child's needs are matched to the skill level and personalities of the foster parents. This is done in an attempt to create a successful and valuable placement for the child.

Foster Care Coordinator

Children are placed in our program by Social Services. The Foster Care Coordinator  is the liaison person between the foster parents and the Social Worker. The coordinator may also facilitate therapeutic visits between the child and the biological family. In addition they provide and support to both the child and the foster family before and after the visits. St. Aidan's ensures there is an adequate level of support in order to successfully maintain a quality level of care to children.

Program Resources

Sunday School - HELPING CHILDREN KNOW AND LOVE JESUS

Sunday School for children 3-12 is offered on Sundays during the weekly worship service at 10:30 a.m. Children usually begin the service with their parents and then go downstairs for Sunday School following the Opening Hymn and brief children's message. They return later in the service to receive Holy Communion with their family. There is a young children's class for 3-6 year olds as well as an older class. We have a team of excellent teachers and helpers who provide creative, fun, bible based lessons. (See criteria for Sunday School Teachers below.)
More Info

Our Sunday School coordinator is Melissa West who would be happy to discuss you child's' involvement in our children's program. Perhaps you are interested in volunteering as a Sunday School teacher at All Saints? Melissa would love to hear from you, please email the parish office at admin@allsaintsanglican.ca

This year in Sunday School

your child will learn the great stories of the Bible;
your child's teachers will show Jesus' love for them ans example to them;
your child will be taught that there is a connection between our faith and our actions, that what they do affects God's creations-each other, mankind, all living creatures, and the environment;
your child will have the opportunity to express praise and thanksgiving, which are natural outgrowth of faith, through music, art, drama, and lessons;
your child will be guided by our belief that children can express faith through ministry ans will have opportunity to do so;
you will receive support as you continue in your role as your child's primary spiritual teacher;
your child will be encouraged in the belief that we are all members of the universal Church and that through that heritage we are taught and sustained.
Support for Parents

The focus on parental support is one which we will be emphasizing this year. We also are exploring new ways to communicate with parents about exactly what we are doing in Sunday School and what resources are available.

Another area we are looking at closely is how we as teachers show God's love. We will look for the needs of the individual child. We will be intentional about making connections with the children. We will be teaching and by example try to help the children of our parish treat each other with respect and kindness.

Criteria for Section of Sunday School Teachers

To ensure children attending ALL SAINTS' Sunday School are protected from sexual, physical and emotional misconduct, the following criteria has be instituted by the Vestry regarding the recruitment and selection of Sunday School teachers:

1.Teachers will be baptized and professing Christians whose lifestyle and commitment to God's Church gives evidence of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
2.Teachers will have an obvious love for children.
3. Teachers will have been active members of ALL SAINTS' for at least one year, at least sixteen years of age, regular communicants, and contributors to the financial work of the Church.
4.Teachers will submit an application to the local RCMP office for a personal back round check, the results of which must be given to the Pastor.
5. Teachers mist assist another experienced teacher for at least two lessons before teaching.
6.Teachers must meet with the Pastor before commencing to teach.
7.Teachers will continue to teach only by appointment of Vestry, to be confirmed each year.
8. Teachers/Helpers must attend the orientation meeting held prior to Sunday School staring in September.

Sunday School Purpose:
To aid the Christian development of the children of the parish of ALL SAINTS' through enjoyable learning experiences, introducing them to God's word and the love of Jesus Christ.

Responsibility:
You are living witness of Christian love. The Teacher/Helper worked with parents, other teachers and the clergy to present a Christian education program that engages the children and nurtures them in their faith development.

Specific Duties:
1. Prepare lessons using curriculum and resources supplied;
2. Supervise and guide children in completing lessons and projects;
3. Ensure that the Sunday school room is clean and presentable after class;
4. Attend teacher's meetings;
5. Assist with special events as related to Sunday School, when possible.

Supervision/Accountability
Sunday School Teachers are accountable to the Rector.

You will always work in a team of at least two people. You will never be expected to be solely responsible for the children on Sunday morning, and teachers generally teach once a month with the aid of a helper.
If you are Team Leader, you must contact your Helpers before Sunday to discuss the lesson and assign tasks.
If the teacher/helper is unable to be present for the scheduled class, he/she should arrange for a replacement and if not possible, notify the Sunday School Coordinator, Melissa West
*As a last resort a message can be left on the church answering machine 780- 743-3171.
The Sunday School Coordinator will communicate regularly with the teachers to ensure supplies are available and to determine if there are any problems.
Time Commitment
Sunday School starts the first Sunday following Labor Day and ends the last Sunday in June. There is no Sunday School on Major feasts. A class can take about 40 minutes and preparation takes about one hour. Members of the parish have offered specific skills (e.g music, arts and crafts) to enhance the Sunday School program.

Rewards/Benefits
It is rewarding to see the growth in the Christian knowledge of the children and their delight in completing tasks.

Orientation/Training
An orientation is held in the early Fall to familiarize teachers with the curriculum and to get to know other Teachers/Helpers. Other meetings will be offered seasonally. Teachers/Helpers will be invited to attend related workshops as available.
